Senior Clarissa Sianuqui had the night of her life, Friday. Not only was it Valentine’s Day and Homecoming, but Clarissa scored 21 points to lead the Lady Tigers in a 67-43 loss to Goodland – that’s almost half of her team’s total offensive output. And to top it off, Clarissa darted to the locker room after the game, changed into a formal dress, and was promptly crowned Homecoming Queen.
As for the game, the Lady Tigers were vastly more competitive against Goodland than they were in the 48-14 loss to Hugoton Feb. 11 and two previous setbacks to Colby and Scott City. Friday’s game was the first time Ulysses scored more than 40 points in a game since a 62-44 loss to Concordia in the Colby Tournament Jan. 25.
The Lady Tigers took a different approach than the previous two games where they started off strong but faded in the second, third, and fourth quarters. This time Ulysses struggled early – an Isabella Sanchez 3-pointer the only first quarter points. But after that, the ladies played respectably, led by Sianuqui, who took matters into her own hands with a trio of threes, a two and a free throw in the second quarter alone. The senior queen drained three more 3-pointers in the contest for 21 points.
Erisbelie Alvarado scored eight points, Isabella Sanchez four, Piper Schultz three, Yosselin Lerma three, Xitaly Castillo two and Devany Vitolas two.
The Tiger boys fell 60-47 after trailing 33-20 at halftime.
Stats were not provided as of deadline.
•The junior varsity girls turned a 25-10 halftime deficit Friday against Goodland into a 41-40 win with a massive second half rally. Jayda Tims quietly sank a free throw with 2.7 seconds left to break a 40-40 tie and win the game.
Ulysses outscored Goodland 17-0 in the third quarter to roar back to within two points behind two 3-pointers from Catalina Molina, another trey and two free throws by Ava Partida, four points by Denise Aguilar Cano and a basket by Corley McCormick. The Lady Tigers took their first lead with 5:54 left in the fourth and went to-to-toe with Goodland before tying the game at 40 with 17 seconds left.
Goodland was unable to score in the final 17 seconds, bringing the Lady Tigers to the line with 2.7 seconds left and setting up Jayda’s heroics.
Partida led Ulysses with eight points, Yairen Molina added six, Catalina Molina six, and Jayda Tims six. Cano added four, Abby Tapia four, Isabella Sanchez three, Devany Vitolas two, and Corley McCormick two.
•In the Feb. 11 games that were moved up because of an impending snowstorm that didn’t really do anything, Hugoton handled the Tigers 73-54 and the Lady Tigers 48-14.
Alvarado led with five points against Hugoton, Piper Schultz added four, Sianuqui three and Yairen Molina two.
Stats from the boys game were not available at deadline.
