The Ulysses High School Lady Tiger volleyball team is in the midst of a long stretch of games leading up to next week’s GWAC Tournament and the competition has been brutal, which will only make the Lady Tigers stronger. Ulysses is scheduled to face Scott City and Hugoton at home this Thursday for a triangular.

Following their last home quad on Sept. 19, the Lady Tigers have competed in a tri at Guymon, Oklahoma, a tri at Hugoton and the Colby Tournament where it faced off against some of the best in the GWAC.

Starting at Guymon, Ulysses fell to Cimarron 25-20, 25-18 but defeated the host Lady Tigers 25-23, 16-25, 25-18. Following the trip south of the border, the Ulysses girls made a shorter drive to Hugoton for a triangular on Sept. 26. and fell to Colby 25-13, 25-17 and swept Goodland 25-19, 31-29.

Ulysses competed in a tournament at Holcomb September 28, going 1-4 on the day with losses to Lakin (25-11, 25-20), Holcomb (25-10, 25-20), Dodge City (25-21, 7-25, 14-25), and Cimarron (18-25, 25-16, 24-26). The Lady Tigers wrapped up the day with a 3-set win over Hugoton (26-28, 25-16, 25-16).

“The tournament for us turned into a long day of volleyball, with three of our five matches going to a third set,” said coach Jillian Scott. “Again, like before, we show great moments of our ability, but are making a few too many mental errors and mistakes that are costing us games.”

Despite going 1-4, the Lady Tigers played well.

“We played a lot of very good volleyball Saturday, but just couldn't finish the job when we needed to,” Scott added. “We ran a new rotation that day, and I thought it went really well for us, and I am in the process of still trying to find our sweet spot as a team, which is why things are continuously changing as we move through the season.

“The girls are very good about being flexible and adjusting to whatever is thrown their way, and when you have the personnel that we do with lots of players that can play lots of different positions, it gives us a lot of flexibility with what we do.”

Hugoton comes into Thursday’s triangular 8-16 overall while Scott City sits at 11-7.

“We are looking forward to more home games again this week on Thursday vs. Scott City and Hugoton, and then another tournament weekend in Oakley on the 5th,” Scott said.

The Lady Tigers competed Monday at Lakin and will compete in the Oakley Tournament this weekend. Ulysses is slated to face Winona Triplains, Oakley, Hays, Bird City Cheylin, and Hitchcock County (Trenton, Nebraska).

Following the trip to Oakley, Ulysses will be back home October 7 for a dual against Leoti Wichita County and travel to Holcomb October 10 for a dual with the Lady Longhorns before the GWAC Tournament.

The Lady Tigers will wrap up the regular season and celebrate senior night October 21 at home against Hugoton before Sub-State begins October 26.
