A Strong run-oriented Scott City offense and Ulysses turnovers contributed to a disappointing night for the Tigers as the Scott City Beavers rolled to a 57-8 win at Maxwell Field, Friday night.
Scott City scored on its first offensive play of the game when Cayden Couchman took a handoff around the left side and raced down the visitor’s sideline for a touchdown just a minute and 30 seconds into the game, setting the tone for the rest of the night.
The Beavers (3-1) capitalized on a Ulysses fumble to record a safety and increase their lead to 8-0. A punt snap sailed over punter Jesus Miranda’s head and Miranda was tackled in the end zone for a safety before Scott City scored on a short run on its ensuing possession and added a conversion run for a 16-0 advantage, still in the first quarter. The drive was aided by a long run by Couchman and a horse collar penalty on the Tigers.
Ulysses answered with a long scoring pass from Tyce Perez to Julian Meraz and, after a Perez conversion run, the Tigers were within striking distance, down just 16-8.
But that would be the only offensive highlight for Ulysses, as the visiting Beavers led 24-8 after the first period and 43-8 at halftime.
The Tigers had some defensive highlights, including a Preston Hittle interception that put Ulysses deep in Scott territory. But the Beavers intercepted a Ulysses pass on the next play.
The Beavers recovered a Ulysses fumble deep in Tiger territory late in the second quarter, as well but the half ended before any more damage was done.
The Tigers recovered two Scott fumbles in the third quarter but couldn’t convert as the Beavers increased their advantage to 57-8 by the end of the third quarter.
Defensively in the fourth, the Tigers recovered another Scott fumble, but an interception on the next play ended any hopes for a Tiger score.
Tyce Perez was 8-for-14 passing for 99 yards, an interception, and the scoring pass to Julian Meraz, while Caden Ledesma was 4-for-15 passing for 52 yards and two interceptions. Meraz caught three passes for 89 yards, Victor Cruz two passes for 30 yards, Jorge Aguilar one for 16 yards, Austyn Leyva one for 14 yards, Edgar Porras one for six yards, Preston Hittle two for five yards, and Joel Guaderrama two for negative-nine yards.
Guaderrama was leading rusher with eight carries for eight yards, and Ledesma carried once for a yard; Perez kept for negative-eight yards and Stryker Berglund carried seven times for negative-12 yards.
Ulysses had 140 yards of total offense.
Berglund had 60 kick return yards with Nicholas Martinez adding 17 kick return yards and Meraz 12.
Perez, Meraz and Guaderrama recovered fumbles defensively and Stryker Berglund dominated the defense with 13 total tackles including a quarterback sack. Guaderrama added six tackles, Ledesma five, and Jesus Miranda four, while Esai Rodriguez, Austyn Leyva, and Devon Devora each had three total tackles.
Miranda punted nine times for an average of 34 yards including a 60-yarder.
