The Ulysses High School cross country team competed Saturday in the Class 4A Regional cross country meet in Hutchinson. Several area individuals joined the Tigers at Prairie Ridge Cross Country Park.
The top area boys finisher was Brandon Gomez of Hugoton who finished 16th in a time of 18:19.70. The top Ulysses finisher was Luis Contreras who was 31st in 19:33. Seven Tigers were grouped between 31st and 44th place.
“The boys team ran very well, but didn't quite end up where they had wished” said coach Kim Sandoval. “The boys team is young and will continue to get better with their times.
“The team is already making plans to improve each and every one. The boys team is deep, and will continue to get better! So look into the future ... the Ulysses Cross will run this town.”
Kye Mendenhall of Buhler was the individual regional champion as the Crusaders won both the boys and girls team championships.
Galilea Martinez and Viridiana Delgado were the two Lady Tigers listed on the final results, placing 34th and 35th, respectively.
Jesus Holguin stepped in to run for Ulysses when another runner fell ill.
In Class 3A, Lakin’s Camden Bergkamp, Zael Bermudez, Brennen Bless, Gabe Cox, Isaac Garcia-Jaquez, Alex Luce, Blake Matthews, Owen Esther, Austin Ritsema and Josiah Sholtz qualified, and Elijah Eisner of Southwestern Heights qualified for state. On the girls side, Southwestern Heights runners Hannah Fieser, Cinthya Garcia, Layla Eisner, Jennifer Lamas, Ella Leak, Sandra Nava and Bianney Palacio qualified.
In Class 2A, Stanton County runners Jonathan Ayala Hernandez, David Crane, Jaydon Edgar, Chris Folger, Andrew Onley, Carter Says, Calan Sims, and Corey Wilson qualified, and on the girls side, Emelin Williamson from Stanton County will run.
In Class 1A, Meade will send Lake Fisher, Anthony Godfrey, Drake Hollis, Jacob Mcnemer, Saul Mendoza, Jordy Padgett, Ryker Vieux, James Woodruff, and Alex Zoerman. Barber’s Joshua MacKinney and Spearville’s Evan Martinez also qualified. For the ladies, Reignie Coggins of South Barber qualified.
