Tigers Battle, Fall Short At Goodland

Ulysses set for Homecoming battle of the Tigers

Tyce Perez threw for 265 yards and four touchdowns but the Ulysses Tigers fell short 48-28 in Goodland. Ulysses (0-5 overall) led 22-21 at halftime.

After the Cowboys (3-2 overall) took their opening drive down for a score, the Tigers responded with the first Perez's four touchdown passes. Ulysses added a conversion run for an 8-7 lead.

Goodland regained the lead 14-8 on a touchdown pass an increased its advantage to 21-8 with one minute to go in the first quarter. But Ulysses wasn’t finished as Perez threw his second scoring pass with less than a minute left in the first quarter to cit it to 21-14.

The Tigers put together a scoring drive in the second quarter, culminating in a Perez scoring strike and conversion pass for a 22-21 halftime lead.

Goodland inched ahead 28-22 at the end of the third quarter, adding  three more touchdowns in the fourth for a 48-22 lead before Tyce threw his final touchdown pass near the end of the game to make for the 48-22 final.

Perez was 22-for-38 passing for 265 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Caden Ledesma attempted one pass for Ulysses.

Julian Meraz caught eight passes for 96 yards and a score, senior Preston Hittle caught six passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns, Jaxon Curl caught four passes for 61 yards, and Joel Guaderrama four passes for 13 yards and a touchdown. Guaderrama ran the ball six times for 10 yards while Perez, Meraz and Stryker Berglund rushed for negative yards as the Tigers ended up with negative-11 rushing yards.

Meraz had 97 kick return yards and Hittle 37.

Berglund recorded a team-leading 10 tackles including two sacks; Meraz added nine tackles; Guaderrama seven; Alex Hostetler five, and Hittle five. Hittle and Meraz each added an interception.

Ulysses will celebrate Homecoming the Friday against Guymon, Oklahoma in a battle of the Tigers. Guymon is 2-4 so far this season and is coming off a 54-6 win over Tulia, Texas last Friday.

Guymon is designated Class 5A by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association but has played an independent freelance schedule since the 2022 season and has not been eligible for the postseason.

The teams share one common opponent in the Liberal Redskins, next week’s opponent for Ulysses. Guymon fell to Liberal 56-0 on Sept. 20.
