On February 3, 2026, the Ulysses Tigers tipped off against the Meade Buffaloes in a high-energy night of basketball featuring two evenly matched teams. Both the girls and boys varsity contests remained competitive through the final minutes, with neither game decided until late in the fourth quarter.
While neither Ulysses varsity team came away with a win, the close scores and pace of play reflected the Tigers’ growth and competitiveness, particularly among two young squads showing strong fundamentals and teamwork.
The Lady Tigers dropped a tightly contested game by a score of 43–39. Following the game, head coach Edeka Hauser praised her team’s effort and resilience.
“Those girls work so hard that if we can get the layups in the basket, it will be a different game,” Hauser said. “I appreciate that they don’t give up and are a very capable team.”
Hauser highlighted several individual performances, noting that Erisbelie Alvarado led the team with 15 points and continues to create scoring opportunities. She also praised Xitlaly Castillo for her ball handling and confidence on the court, Piper Schultz for taking on one of the team’s toughest assignments night after night, and Isabella Sanchez for the amount of time and effort she puts into her game.
Hauser added that the JV girls secured a win on the night and noted the Lady Tigers have six games remaining before Sub-State, where a late-season win could help improve postseason positioning.
The boys varsity game proved equally intense, with Ulysses making strong use of the full court and increasing their attempts from beyond the three-point line. From the opening tip, the game stayed neck-and-neck, with both teams trading baskets and momentum.
The Tigers remained within striking distance throughout the second half, but Meade ultimately edged out Ulysses 54–53 in the closing moments.
UHS Principal Justin Coffey commented on the progress of this year’s boys team, emphasizing the strength of the competition they face.
“They are doing great, but Ulysses is positioned in such a competitive league,” Coffey said. “There are six games remaining against Scott City, Lakin, Hugoton, Goodland, Holcomb, and Syracuse, and Ulysses is currently sitting in the middle of the pack in the 4A West standings.”
Despite the narrow losses, the night showcased the Tigers’ determination and potential as both teams continue to build toward the postseason.
