The Ulysses Tigers and Lady Tigers hit the road north to Colby for the annual Orange and Black Classic last weekend, with both teams competing well against top competition.
The Lady Tigers opened the tournament Thursday with a 69-35 loss to a Beloit Trojans team that went into the game with a 6-3 record against the Lady Tigers, who play well despite their record. Senior Clarissa Sianuqui drained 22 points with six 3-pointers, four of those in the fourth quarter as Beloit built a 34-16 halftime advantage.
In addition to Clarissa’s 22 points, Nayeli Romero added five, Isabella Sanchez three, Erisbelie Alvarado two, Yoselyn Lerma two, and Piper Schultz one. Beloit’s Cassandra Thompson matched Sianuqui’s 22 points and Reagan Cheney added 14.
In Friday’s matchup against Olathe East, Ulysses fell 57-38 as Alvarado led with 15 points, followed by 11 from Sianuqui, Schultz with six points, Nayeli Romero five, and Devany Vitolas with a free throw. The Lady Tigers trailed just 24-17 at halftime.
The Lady Tigers ended their trip to Colby on Saturday against Concordia, the Lady Tigers fell 62-44 as Sianuqui once again dominated for Ulysses with 18 points and was game-high scorer. Alvarado added nine points, Devany Vitolas scored five, Corley McCormick five, Xitaly Castillo four, and Piper Schultz three.
Clarissa Sianuqui was named to the All-Tournament Academic Team, and head coaches Audrey Marshall and Matt Cox won the Tom Bowen Coaches Award, which is based on a set of criteria from basketball knowledge and fundamentals of the game to sportsmanship, strong work ethics and sound moral character to motivate their team in a positive way, no matter the game situation at hand.
Clarissa Sianuqui and Erisbelie Alvarado also won the first round of the 3-point Super Shot contest. Ulysses was awarded the "Marvin Stark Spirit Award" for the 3rd straight year. This award is presented in memory of Marvin Stark, who was the Colby High School principal for many years until his death in 1989. This award goes to the team and community that best exemplifies an outstanding rating for sportsmanship with their cheerleaders, cheering section, team, and fans.
The Tiger boys opened the tournament Thursday against Olathe North, falling 81-31 as North ran to a 26-11 advantage in the first quarter and led 47-18 at halftime. Corban Deirking led Ulysses with 10 points, Caden Ledesma added nine, Julian Meraz five, Parker Browning four and Jorge Aguilar three.
In Friday’s second round in Colby, the Tigers took on Colorado Springs Pine Creek, falling 45-42. Aden Alvarado led Ulysses with 16 points, Meraz added nine, Deirking eight, Ledesma six and Luis Contrarez three.
The Tigers concluded the tournament Saturday against 10th-ranked Concordia, coming away with a 60-51 win led by 22 points from Caden Ledesma, 15 points from Meraz, Stryker Berglund added nine, Parker Browning nine, Contrarez three and Deirking two.

The Lady Bulldogs surged to an 18-8 lead in the first quarter and outscored Sublette 29-3 in the second and third quarters combined to improve to 5-7 while Sublette dropped to 0-12.

Wichita County continued to roll, winning their 12th straight in Johnson over a solid Stanton County team.
Deerfield 46, Elkhart 42
The Spartans improved to 4-7.
SW Hts. 49, Lakin 38
The Lady Mustangs held a slim 11-10 lead after the first quarter in Kismet but outscored Lakin 18-7 in the second period, which ended up being the difference-maker as the Lady Broncs won the second half. Heights improved to 11-1.

Sublette improved to 4-6.
Stanton Co. 70, Elkhart 46
Johnson improved to 7-1 with the win as David Crane led the Trojans with 24 points and 13 rebounds; Corey Wilson added 13 points and Arihm Gonzalez 12 points.
Lakin 95, Wichita County 30
The Broncs led 25-4 after the first eight minutes and 50-11 at halftime.
