Tigers, Lady Tigers Grab First Wins At Top Side Tip-Off

The Ulysses Lady Tigers picked up the first win of the season Saturday in Goodland to place seventh overall at the Top Side Tip-Off, downing Wray, Colorado 43-39. The Tiger boys got their first win on Friday, 66-31 over Burlington, Colorado. The Tigers and Lady Tigers held their home-opener Tuesday, but results were not available due to print deadlines.

THURSDAY

Girls

Burlington, Colo. 61, Ulysses 42

Burlington eased to a 13-9 first quarter advantage and kept consistent pressure the entire game to hand the Lady Tigers their second defeat in as many games.  Burlington senior Kiarra Williams scored 25 points to lead the Lady Cougars, who jumped to a 31-18 halftime lead. Ulysses hung with the Cougars in the second half as the Lady Tigers were outscored 28-25.

Piper Schultz led Ulysses with 13 points and Clarissa Sianuqui added 11; Erisbelie Alvarado scored nine points, Isabella Sanchez four, Yairen Molina two, Nayeli Romero two and Xitaly Castillo two. Sianuqui hit three 3-pointers, Schultz hit three, Alvarado one and Sanchez one.

Bethany Cure scored 12 for Burlington in addition to Williams’s 25.

Boys

Lakin 76, Ulysses 53

Corbin Deirking scored 18 points and Julian Meraz 12 to lead the Tigers. Caden Ledesma scored eight and Caden Ledesma seven. Nico Doume scored 20 for Lakin.

FRIDAY

Girls

Lakin 64, Ulysses 33

The Lady Tigers inched to a 7-6 first quarter advantage, led by a basket and four free throws by Isabella Sanchez, but the Lady Broncs went on a 21-13 run in the second quarter for a 27-20 halftime lead, and held Ulysses to 13 second half points for the win.

Aryn Michaelis led Lakin with 17 points and Lileah Villa added 11.

The Lady Tigers spread the wealth as nine players scored, led by Sanchez with nine, Clarissa Sianuqui with five, Erisibelie Alvarado four, Nayeli Romero four, Devany Vitolas three, Yairen Molina two, Piper Schultz two, Natalya Sifuentes two and Corley McCormick two.

Boys

Ulysses 66,

Burlington, Colo. 31

Julian Meraz led the Tigers in scoring with 18 points, Corbin Deirking added 14 and Parker Browning 12; Caden Ledesma added eight and Luis Contrarez five. Ulysses opened with a 15-6 first quarter run and led 34-16 at the half.

Wray, Colorado 39

The Lady Tigers added one to the win column with a 4-point victory over the Wray Lady Eagles on their last day in Goodland. Ulysses (1-3) surged to a 12-4 advantage in the first quarter behind Xitaly Castillo and Piper Schultz, who combined for 10 of the Lady Tigers points in the opening quarter.

The teams fought to a draw in the second period and Ulysses led 19-11 at halftime, maintaining an 8-point lead entering the final frame. Wray made a run in the fourth but it wasn’t enough and the Lady Tigers got the win for seventh place in the tournament.

Castillo led Ulysses with 13 points, Clarissa Sianuqui added 10, Schultz seven, Erisbelie Alvarado six, Devany Vitolas three, Isabella Sanchez three and Natalya Sifuentes two.

Addison Jones added 11 for Wray.

Natalya Sifuentes earned All-Tournament Leadership honors and was given the Spirit of Sport award.

“We often tell our girls, ‘You are not defined as a great player by how many points you score, but by how you respond to mistakes,’” head coach Audrey Marshall said in a Facebook post used by permission. “We are playing a game. These girls understand that leadership is a standard in our program. This isn't the first time they have been recognized for our leadership and spirit at a major tournament.

“We emphasize the importance of consistency in character. I am incredibly proud of these girls, our boys, our cheer team and all of our supporters. It's wonderful to see that the world recognizes their achievements, as well.”

Boys

McCook, Nebraska 58, Ulysses 50

Meraz was once again the top scorer for Ulysses with 16 points, Browning added 12, and Ledesma 10, Deirking eight and Contrarez four.

The Satanta Lady Indians picked up their first win of the season on Friday the 13th, 66-34 over the Rolla Pirates.

Yahaira Puerto led all scorers with 28 points on 47% shooting along with eight rebounds, Mia Burrows added 14 points with a pair of 3-pointers, Jasmine Wood scored 11 points and had 13 rebounds, Eva Loewen four points and seven boards, Anai Sanchez four points and Adriana Gutierrez three points.

On Saturday, the Moscow Pirates got the better of Satanta, 50-41. Puerto again led Satanta with 21 points, two rebounds, three assists and three steals; Wood added five points and nine boards, and Loewen added eight boards.

Moscow won their Friday game against Deerfield, 36-25.

νThe Sublette Lady Larks fell to Macksville on Friday, 53-23, and to Spearville on Saturday, 49-16. The Sublette boys fell to Macksville 59-47 on Friday and Spearville 63-50 on Saturday.

νIn the Border Wars Tournament, the Stanton County boys downed Cheyenne Wells, Colorado 54-35 on Saturday after suffering their first loss of the season Friday to Stratton, Colorado, 52-51. In the loss to Stratton, David Crane scored 25 points to lead the Trojans, including three 3-pointers and six rebounds; Gerardo Robles added 15 points, five boards and four steals.

The Lady Trojans fell to Stratton 49-45 in Friday’s Border Wars Tournament, and defeated Cheyenne Wells 39-36 on Saturday.

Avery Scott led the Lady Trojans with 22 points and 21 rebounds against Stratton and had 13 points, two steals and six boards against Cheyenne Wells. Hannah Canny scored 11 for Johnson against Cheyenne Wells along with two steals, and Kensington Nairn scored seven points with four rebounds and two assists.
