Topside Tipoff Tests Tigers

Thursday, December 11 through Saturday, December 13 — The Ulysses High School Tiger basketball teams traveled to Goodland to compete in the Topside Tipoff Tournament, with both the girls and boys squads earning competitive finishes against strong fields.

The Lady Tigers opened tournament play Thursday against the Wray Eagles, falling 50–39. On Friday, Ulysses rebounded with a 43–32 victory over the Colby Eagles. The Lady Tigers returned to the court Saturday to face the Burlington Cougars, where they suffered a narrow 46–41 loss, resulting in a sixth-place finish for the tournament.

The Ulysses boys basketball team opened play Thursday with a 64–48 victory over the Wray Eagles. On Friday afternoon, the Tigers faced Wichita Life Prep and fell by a score of 64–48. On Saturday, Ulysses took on host school Goodland in the fourth-place game, falling 65–62 to finish fourth overall in the tournament.

Prior to the tournament, boys basketball head coach Matt Cox shared insight into the outlook for the season, noting that the 2025–2026 Ulysses Tigers enter the year with optimism and purpose.

“The players and staff have instilled a culture centered on discipline, effort, and unity,” Cox said. “If we can blend our defensive toughness with improved offensive execution, we have the potential to surprise opponents and contend in the GWAC this year.”

Coach Cox cited depth and versatility as key strengths for the Tigers, pointing to a balanced roster that includes athletic guards with speed and quickness, along with versatile post players. He also emphasized the team’s leadership and experience, with returning varsity players providing guidance both on and off the court.
