UHS Wrestlers sixth at regionals, send five to state

The Ulysses High School wrestling team visited Rose Hill High School for the 4A regional tournament with five wrestlers qualifying for this weekend’s state tournament in Salina.

State qualifiers for Ulysses are Dominic Sanchez, who was fourth at 113 pounds; Roman Romero fourth at 126 pounds; Sebastian Heredia third at 138 pounds; Jaxsen Salinas third at 144 pounds, and Preston Hittle third at 150 pounds.

Individual results for Ulysses included Israel Moya at 106 pounds going 0-2, falling to Tommy Proctor of Winfield and Luke Owen of Circle.

Sanchez opened the championship round at 113 pounds with a win over Aiden Brinkley of Nickerson, a win in the quarterfinals over Nick Collins of Circle, and fell to Trenton Richwine of Rose Hill in the semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, Sanchez defeated Brinkley again before falling to Isaiah Peachey of Hugoton by a 7-0 decision in the third place match.

At 120 pounds, Maddox Delgado went 1-2, winning over Bryant Pechanec of Clearwater.

At 126 pounds, Romero was 4-1 before falling to Cale Willis by a 7-6 decision in the third place match.

Heredia had been rolling through the 138 poubd ckass with wins over Aden Taylor of Nickerson in the quarterfinals before falling to Cash McVay in the semifinals. Heredia capped his day with wins over Bryson Karst of El Dorado and Dylan Hanna of Clearwater for third place.

Salinas took third at 144 pounds with wins over Tucker Reed of El Dorado and Kavin Larios of Augusta before falling to Tristen Cox of Andale by a 4-0 decision. From there, Salinas won by major decision over Reed, 15-3, and won third by 15-8 decision over Quaid Gilliland of Winfield.

Hittle placed third and advanced to state with a 5-1 record at regionals. The only loss was a fall to undefeated Damon Ingram of Rose hill in 36 seconds. Hittle won won by major decision over Javid Corral of Holcomb, won by technical fall over Ian Flaten of Mulvane, 16-0; won by fall over Mason Pringle of Augusta; won by major decision over Zane Swinford of Winfield, 21-8, and won the third place match by major decision over Javid Corral of Holcomb, 16-3.

At 157 pounds, Jesus Miranda went 0-2, and at 175 pounds, Gavin Smith went 0-2. At 190 pounds, Jackson Hauser went 0-2, and at 285 Caden Reims went 1-2 with a 1-0 decision win over James Bishop of Holcomb.
