Ulysses High School JAG-K program hosted its annual Initiation and Installation Ceremony October 15, welcoming parents, teachers, and community members to celebrate the program’s growth and the achievements of its students.
JAG-K, which stands for Jobs for America’s Graduates – Kansas, is a relatively new addition to the Ulysses School District, designed to help students develop leadership, employability, and life skills that prepare them for success after graduation.
The evening began with a slideshow presentation highlighting the club’s recent activities and accomplishments, followed by a stirring performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by the UHS Concert Choir and the Pledge of Allegiance. Honorary guests were then introduced, and both Kepley Middle School and Ulysses High School JAG-K officers were recognized with certificates before new members were formally installed.
Several speakers took the podium throughout the evening, with State Representative Marty Long serving as the principal speaker. Long reflected on his own high school experiences in Ulysses, sharing how much has changed — and how much remains the same — while emphasizing the importance of programs like JAG-K in shaping future community and state leaders.
One of the evening’s most heartfelt moments came when senior JAG-K students presented a rose to a Ulysses High School staff member who had made a meaningful impact on their educational journey. Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed refreshments and conversation, celebrating the students’ accomplishments and bright futures ahead.
As the new school year continues, the community looks forward to seeing this year’s JAG-K students actively engaged and making a difference both in school and throughout Ulysses.
