Carl Wayne Johnson, 83, Ulysses, died Tuesday, August 20, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kans.
He was born June 29, 1941, in Satanta, Kans., the son of Elmer and Helen (Jones) Johnson.
Carl grew up in Grant County and graduated from Grant County Rural High School with the class of 1961. He then attended Fort Hays State University.
Carl married Deanna F. Nash June 9, 1963, in Ulysses.
He was a farmer and rancher and enjoyed riding horses. He enjoyed attending and supporting his kids in their activities, music, debate and sports. Some of his hobbies included building model airplanes, collecting antiques, reading and watching westerns, and was an avid history buff with an emphasis on the Civil War and World War II.
Carl was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Jaycees, served on the Little Britches Rodeo Board, and was the Kansas Outstanding Young Farmer Runner-up.
Carl is survived by his wife, Deanna, of the home; son, Keenan Johnson, Austin, Texas; daughter, Jill Fishburn and husband, Paul, Chandler, Ariz.; son of our hearts, Chad Christian, San Pedro, Calif.; brother, Steve Johnson and wife, Marlene, Ulysses; sister-in-law, Marilyn Johnson, Ulysses; two grandchildren: Grant and Madelyne Fishburn; and nieces and nephews who were very special to him.
Carl is preceded in death by his parents; son, Patrick Johnson; brothers: Robert, Don and Vergil Johnson; and sister, Marjorie Von Bank.
Visitation took place from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., Friday, August 23, at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
Funeral service took place at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 24, at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses, with Pastor Willy Banza officiating.
A private interment took place at the Ulysses Cemetery.
