Steven M. Porter

Steven M. Porter, 77, died Monday, August 19, at his home in Ulysses. 

He was born April 8, 1947, in Liberal, Kans., the son of Milton and Maxine (Swan) Porter.

Steven lived in Stevens County until the age of 12, when his family moved to Haskell County where he graduated from Sublette High School.  He furthered his education at Dodge City Community College and Fort Hays State University where he earned a bachelor's degree in business. 

Steven married Jane Majernik September 4, 1970, in Russell, Kans.

He worked for Cities Service, Oxy, Golden Rule in Johnson, and the Kansas Department of Transportation in Ulysses. 

He loved to golf, play cards and games.  He was an avid cat lover and spent a lot of time with his beloved pets.  He also traveled and took the family on summer vacations each year.  Some of his hobbies included watching sports, especially KU Basketball and Royals Baseball, watching old western  movies, playing bingo, fishing, hunting pheasants, and shooting pool.  His favorite holiday was the 4th of July.  He loved to shoot off fireworks and shared that love with his kids and grandkids.  Steven was very proud of his family and grandkids and treasured the time he spent with them and attending their games and activities.  Steven enjoyed meeting his friends at McDonald's for coffee and going to the Grant County Senior Center. 

He was a longtime member of Shelton Memorial Christian Church.

Steven is survived by his daughters: Julie Hickman, Wichita, and Stephanie Shivers and husband, Tyler, Winfield, Kans.; brother, Gary Porter and wife, Janie, Hugoton; brother-in-law, John Majernik and wife, Kathi, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and three grandchildren: Joshua Hickman, Jackson Shivers, and Jaylin Shivers.

Steven is preceded in death by his father, Milton Porter; mother and stepdad, Maxine and Jim Dewey; wife, Jane; son-in-law, Jason Hickman; and sister, Nancy Porter Claggett.

Visitation took place from 2-8 p.m., Thursday, August 22, with family present at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. 

Funeral service took place at 10 a.m.,  Friday, August 23, at Shelton Memorial Christian Church, with Reverend Casey Chapman officiating. 

Interment followed at the Ulysses Cemetery.
