CLEMSON, S.C. - Margene Shorter passed from this life at the Cottingham Hospice House in Seneca, South Carolina August 13, after a short illness, she was 94.

Margene was born March 12, 1930, in rural Grant County (Ulysses), Kans., to Aaron Calvin Moore and Ora Lavina Landes Moore, both proceded her in death.

She graduated from the Grant County Rural High School with the Class of 1948.

Charles Philip Shorter and Margene were united in marriage September 3, 1949.  They made a life together in rural Grant County as a farmer/rancher and homemaker.  They were married until his death June 14, 2015.

Philip and Margene raised six children: Lucinda Davis (Dwayne), Pickens, SC; Marvin Shorter, Holyrood, Kans.; Verlin Shorter (Dinah), Wellsville, Kans.; Vaden Gary Shorter (deceased); Johanna Aleck (Marc) Clemson, SC, and Janet Freed (Robert), Delta, Colo.

As her need for care increased, Margene moved to Clemson at the age of 91.  She left her beloved hometown to live closer to Lucinda and Johanna.  At the time of her passing, Margene was a resident of Dominion Assisted Living of Clemson.  She has many friends there.

Margene cherished her nine grandchildren:  AJ Davis (Renee), Pickens, SC; Cale Dwayne Davis (deceased); Jordan Shorter (Rachel), Ulysses; Morgan Shorter (Lindsay), Fargo, Okla.; Hillary Shorter, Woodward, Okla.; Dustin Shorter (Amy), Olathe, Kans.; Delayna Terrio (Matt), Bow, NH; Logan Freed, Denver, Colo., and Grant Freed, Fort Collins, Colo.  Margene has nine great grandchildren:  Kamryn, Caleb and Alexander Davis, Isabelle and Hannah Shorter,  Savanah Shorter, Zoey Shorter, Briar and Mazie Terrio.

Margene was proceded in death by her parents; one brother, Robert Aaron Moore; one sister, Ida Lavina Pucket; her husband; one son and one grandson.

As a mother, Margene encouraged her children to stay active in programs such as wrestling, baseball and swimming.  All her children were active in the Grant County 4-H Clubs.  Margene spent many active years with the Bearcreek Boosters 4-H Club, leading her children to successful lives.  As her children and grandchildren moved away to pursue their own lives, one of Margene’s favorite things to do was to travel the United States alone, by bus, to visit them.  Boarding the bus at a pickup point in Lakin, Kans., she rode over the years to South Carolina, Colorado, California and Montana.  She took dad with her to Nashville, Tenn., for their 40th Wedding Anniversary and saw the Grand Ole Opry, fulfilling a childhood dream.  She flew sometimes also; although, she did not prefer that mode of travel. She spoke many times of the beautiful countryside along the bus rides.  Margene and Philip enjoyed the people of Ulysses and spent many hours at the Grant County Senior Center telling stories and sharing meals.

Family is planning burial of Margene’s cremains next to dad at the Ulysses Cemetery during the weekend of the Grant County Alumni All School Reunion 2025 with a graveside memorial.

To honor Margene’s memory and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grant County 4-H Clubs, 1100 W. Patterson, Ave, Ulysses, Kansas 67880 or to the Grant County Senior Center, 117 E. Grant Ave, Ulysses, Kansas 67880.
