Lavonne Michael

Lavonne Michael, 89, Ulysses, died Thursday, July 11, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kans. 

She was born October 11, 1934, in Ellijay, Georgia, the daughter of Ottis William and Thelma May (Cochran) Reese. 

Lavonne grew up in Georgia where she graduated high school and college. 

She was a Radar Operator stationed at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. 

While living in Colorado Springs, she met James “Mike” Michael and married him April 21, 1953, in Raton, NM.

She taught school in Denver, Colo.   After completing her teaching contract, the family moved to Ulysses in 1973. 

Lavonne was the Director of Grant County Senior Center for 46 years.  She lived to help people and enjoyed sharing her produce from her large garden with them.

Lavonne is survived by her sons: Anthony Michael, Ulysses, and Troy Michael, Albany, Ore.; two grandchildren: Curtis and Kara; and three great-grandchildren: Victor, Hugo, and Lucia.

Lavonne is preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Mike, in 2019.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m., Tuesday, July 16, at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. 

Funeral service will be Wednesday, at 10 a.m., July 17, at Shelton Memorial Chrisitan Church, with Pastor Casey Chapman officiating. 

Interment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery. 

Memorial contributions may be given to the Grant Mennonite Church or donor’s choice in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS  67880.
